Kitchen Unconfidential
Having a good kitchen is important to me, both because i love to cook (and eat, ahem!) but also because kitchens mean being cozy and lived in for me, especially when close friends come over. We've already had a couple of dinner parties at our new home, and the room wasn't even done yet. It is now, just about. So, meet our 1950's inspired kitchen, after a trip to Mexico!
After years of having yellow walls, starting at my parents cozy kitchen, we took a bold step and introduced 'Samba Orange' - aka clementine orange - to our kitchen. Our turquoise blue chairs, and all the yellow accessories look just lovely beside the walls. And, since the kitchen is in it's original lay-out (but the cupboards seem to have been reincarnated in at least 3 different colours), i wanted to stay true to its character.
We also really wanted more counter space, so instead of buying an island or totally renovating the place, we came up with a lovely solution. We have a portable dishwasher (which is very exciting as we both hate doing the dishes!) and J made this lovely island out of an old, broken chest of drawers the old owners left behind. We store our frying pans and cookbooks in it, and it has its own cutting board on top. Brilliant! A J original design, too!

cool! i love your stool - my grandma used to have one like that.
The new cupboard looks wonderful! I love how he transformed it. And what a great idea for storing pans, which is always a trial to me. I will keep that in mind as we look at houses to buy here in Portland where the kitchens are VERY small and many do not have room in the cupboards for a dishwasher.
I also love seeing what you've done with the color on your walls. My husband has always been a white wall sort of guy but his mind is slowly opening as he sees all of the color people use here in their homes. I'd love to do cheery things like that green.
love the "clementine" coloured walls! so bright and cheery! and j's creation of an island shelf unit from a broken drawer is 100% brilliant! really cute!
You've really settled in! We have a rolling dishwasher at our apartment. And i love the cutting board cupboard! There are NEVER enough counters!!
Looks so good! very cozy!
Love, love, love your kitchen. Can't wait to see the other colourful, life-filled, creative rooms that you and J have crafted in your wonderful new home!!
I love your kitchen - very warm and homey...
Nice job. That Pyrex up top looks awfully familiar.... ;-)
